My Child is Sick

What should I do?

If it is an emergency, you do not need to call us, take your child to the CHOA Egleston or Scottish Rite Emergency Department. Our doctors will be updated that your child has been seen and/ or you can call us after you get back home.

A fever warrants an immediate trip to the Emergency Department when it occurs in an infant less than 1 month old.  All babies at this age who have a rectal temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or greater should go to the Emergency Department for further evaluation.

If you child needs Ibuprofen (Motrin), Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Benadryl, click for the Dosing chart.

If it is during the week between 8am and 5pm (not lunch), a portal message  is the quickest way to ask your doctor a question.  If you know that your child needs a sick visit appointment, call our main number at (404) 371-9838 and choose option 2 to schedule an appointment.  If you are unsure if you need an appointment or would like to talk to one of our nurses, choose option 3.

If it is during lunch (12:30 – 1:15) and can not wait until 1:15, we recommend that you take your child to one of the CHOA Urgent Care locations. There is a new location (inside the perimeter!) in Brookhaven. Wait times and hours are available online.http://www.choa.org/Childrens-Hospital-Services/Urgent-Care

If it is after hours, please first check the link below. Dr. Doyle and Dr. Kanaan have written these answers themselves so it is the same information that you will get by calling. If you need to see a doctor, we recommend that you take your child to one of the CHOA Urgent Care locations.  The link is above with the “during lunch” info.  If it is after 9pm, we recommend that you go to the CHOA Egleston or Scottish Rite Emergency Department.Image result for medical questions

Also, we recommend checking out CHOA’s Parent Education Hub.

If your question was not answered in the link above, and CANNOT WAIT for a portal response or until the office is open again, please call our main number (404) 371-9838. Our answering service will connect you with a Image result for children's healthcare of atlantaCHOA nurse who should be able to provide you with advice and guidance. If the nurse recommends that you speak to a doctor, please call our office back and let the answering service know you have already spoken with a nurse and need to speak with the on-call doctor. We recognize that this may create an extra step, but in an effort to keep our doctors from being overwhelmed with after-hours calls and available for emergencies when their input is truly needed, we ask that families first discuss their concerns with the nurse.
